A recent investigative audit of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) has found that the agency did not break state law. However, the report has raised concerns about the wide powers the authority holds and has suggested stronger oversight from lawmakers. Audit Finds No Legal Violations by Oklahoma Turnpike Authority
The audit was released on Wednesday by State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd. It was ordered after Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond raised concerns about the financial practices of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.
According to the report, investigators did not find any evidence that the agency failed to follow existing state laws. The audit concluded that the OTA is currently operating within the legal framework set by the state.
However, the report also pointed out that the laws governing the agency give it very broad powers. Because of this, the auditor recommended that lawmakers review and update those laws to ensure better control and accountability.
Background: Concerns Over Financial Practices and Transparency
The request for the audit came after growing concerns about the OTA’s financial management and transparency. These concerns became stronger after a 2022 court ruling.
In that ruling, a court found that the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority had violated the state’s Open Meetings Act. This law requires government agencies to conduct meetings openly so the public can stay informed about decisions that affect them.
Because of this issue, the attorney general asked for a deeper investigation into the authority’s operations and financial activities.

After the report was released, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority responded through a Facebook post. The agency said it would carefully review the audit findings.
The OTA also said it remains committed to improving its policies and record-keeping practices based on the recommendations provided in the report.
The authority added that it plans to strengthen its internal systems to ensure better transparency moving forward.
Attorney General Calls for Meaningful Reform
Attorney General Gentner Drummond said the audit should be seen as an opportunity to improve how the agency operates.
He noted that while the audit did not find any criminal misconduct, it should not be considered a complete endorsement of the agency’s actions.
According to Drummond, the findings clearly show that more oversight, accountability, and transparency are needed at the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.
He expressed hope that lawmakers will take the report seriously and introduce reforms that strengthen public trust in the agency.
