A tragic and mysterious case from California has raised questions about online scams, emotional manipulation, and the deaths of an elderly couple found inside their luxury home. Authorities are now investigating the deaths of Karen and Donald Whitaker as a homicide after the couple were discovered with traumatic injuries in their home at an exclusive golf community.
The case has gained even more attention after a family friend revealed that Karen Whitaker had reportedly been sending money for months to someone pretending to be famous actor Tom Selleck.
Elderly Couple Found Dead Inside California Home
Karen Whitaker, 79, and her husband Donald Whitaker, 80, were found dead on May 15 at their home in Bermuda Dunes Country Club.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the home after receiving a request for a welfare check. When officers entered the residence, they discovered both victims suffering from what authorities described as “traumatic injuries.”
Police have not publicly revealed the exact nature of the injuries, but investigators confirmed they are treating the deaths as a homicide case.
Friend Says Woman Was Caught in Celebrity Scam
In the days after the shocking discovery, a close friend of the Whitakers spoke to local media outlets and shared troubling details about an alleged online scam targeting Karen Whitaker.
According to family friend Joy Miedecke, Karen believed she had been communicating directly with actor Tom Selleck, who is well known for starring in the TV shows Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods.
Miedecke told reporters that the situation started after Karen Whitaker posted a Facebook tribute about a friend who had passed away. Shortly afterward, someone allegedly contacted her by text message claiming to be Selleck.
The scammer reportedly told Karen that he had once dated the woman she was honoring online, creating what appeared to be an emotional connection.
Victim Allegedly Sent Thousands of Dollars
According to Miedecke, Karen Whitaker gradually became emotionally invested in the online relationship.
At first, she reportedly sent gift cards worth between $80 and $800. Over time, the payments allegedly increased to thousands of dollars.
Friends and family members became deeply concerned and tried multiple times to stop the situation.
Miedecke said relatives contacted both law enforcement and Adult Protective Services after realizing Karen was being manipulated. Family members even destroyed her credit cards and limited access to her bank account.
However, despite those efforts, Karen reportedly continued finding ways to send money to the alleged scammer.
Friends Tried to Convince Her the Scam Was Fake
As concern grew, the Whitakers’ friends reportedly made extraordinary efforts to prove the messages were fake.
According to Miedecke, they even found someone connected to actor Tom Selleck who personally tried to explain the truth to Karen.
The friend reportedly told her directly:
“Tom Selleck does not do this.”
But according to Miedecke, the warning had no effect.
“It didn’t matter. She couldn’t stop believing it.”
Husband Was Reportedly Devastated
Miedecke also spoke about the emotional impact the alleged scam had on Donald Whitaker.
In an interview with local media, she described him as being overwhelmed with sadness after learning how deeply involved his wife had become with the scammer.
She reportedly said Donald was “full of grief” over the situation.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the alleged scam and the couple’s deaths are directly connected, and investigators have not announced any suspects or arrests in the homicide case.
Online Romance Scams Continue to Target Seniors
The tragic story has once again highlighted the growing danger of online impersonation and romance scams, especially involving elderly victims.
Scammers often pretend to be celebrities, military officers, or wealthy professionals to gain trust and manipulate victims emotionally before asking for money.
