Body Found Inside Motel Room
Johnson’s body was discovered at the Rodeway Inn and Suites on St. Mary’s Lane in Saginaw, about 100 miles northwest of Detroit.
According to reports, the discovery happened after a drug dealer went to the motel room looking for Varnes.
The man had earlier met Varnes at a nearby gas station where he agreed to sell him crack cocaine for $60. However, authorities say Varnes took the drugs and ran without paying.
The dealer later called Varnes, who told him to come to his motel room.
When the dealer entered the room, he reportedly noticed a body lying on the bed under a blanket.
Suspect Allegedly Revealed the Body
During testimony, the dealer said Varnes pointed toward the bed and told him he had “this situation going on.”
When the dealer asked what was under the blanket, Varnes allegedly responded:
“You know exactly what that is.”
Varnes then removed the blanket, revealing Johnson’s body. The dealer told investigators it appeared she had been dead for several days.
Varnes reportedly claimed Johnson had died from injuries she received while visiting friends earlier. He also allegedly suggested it would be easy to dispose of the body since no one knew she had been staying with him.
The dealer quickly left the room and called 911.
Police Capture Suspect After Brief Manhunt
Police arrived at the motel shortly after receiving the emergency call. By that time, Varnes had fled on foot and ran into nearby woods.
Authorities later located and arrested him in the forest around 4 p.m. the same day.
Following his arrest, detectives interviewed Varnes about the incident.
Investigators Describe Weeklong Abuse
According to prosecutors, Varnes admitted during questioning that he had repeatedly assaulted Johnson inside the motel room.
Investigators say the abuse included:
- Punching and kicking the victim
- Beating her with objects
- Striking her with boots
- Using tools to injure her
One detective testified that Varnes admitted he had severely beaten Johnson multiple times during the week.
Authorities also reported that Varnes used needle-nose pliers on the victim’s mouth in an attempt to silence her.
Tools With Victim’s Blood Found in Room
Police searching the motel room recovered several tools believed to have been used during the abuse.
Items reportedly found in the room included:
- Scissors
- Pliers
- Screwdrivers
- Side cutters
- A ratchet tool
Investigators said testing revealed Johnson’s blood on several of the objects.
Autopsy Reveals Severe Injuries
A medical examination later determined that Johnson died from multiple traumatic injuries, both recent and older wounds, along with related medical complications.
Authorities believe she endured prolonged violence before her death.
Neighbors Say They Had No Idea
A woman who had been staying in the room next to Varnes for more than two months said she never suspected such violence could have been happening nearby.
She told reporters that she had seen Varnes frequently during that time and never noticed anything unusual.
The case shocked people staying at the motel and residents in the surrounding area.
Sentencing Scheduled for April
Although Varnes has entered a no-contest plea and agreed to the prison term, he is scheduled to appear in court for his official sentencing on April 13.
The plea deal is expected to result in him serving 32 years in prison for the brutal killing.
