A disturbing attempted murder case from Minnesota has shocked local residents after a 72-year-old man was accused of attacking his wife with a hammer inside their home. Authorities say the violent assault may have turned deadly if an Amazon delivery driver had not arrived at the right moment and stepped in to help.
Minnesota Man Accused of Trying to Kill Wife With Hammer
James Alan Johnson, 72, has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened on May 11 at the couple’s home on Heims Lake Circle in Wyoming, Minnesota, a small town located around 30 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Police say Johnson allegedly planned the attack for several days before carrying it out.
Amazon Delivery Driver Helped Stop The Attack
Authorities revealed that an Amazon delivery driver played a major role in preventing the situation from becoming even worse.
According to court documents, the driver arrived at the home to deliver a package when he heard loud screaming coming from inside the house. He also reportedly saw a woman covered in blood and a man holding a hammer.
The delivery driver quickly entered the house and shouted at Johnson to drop the weapon before calling 911.
Investigators say Johnson handed the hammer over to the driver before walking toward the basement.
Victim Found Bleeding on Living Room Floor
When police officers arrived, they found the Amazon truck parked outside and the front door wide open.
Inside the home, officers discovered the victim lying on the living room floor in a pool of blood while crying out for help.
Police said the woman suffered serious injuries to her head, arms, and hands. Investigators also noticed two deep wounds on her head that appeared to match hammer strikes.
Emergency responders treated her at the scene before taking her to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for further medical care.
Victim Fought Back During Attack
According to the criminal complaint, the woman told investigators that her husband hit her twice with the hammer.
She reportedly managed to stop the attack temporarily by kicking him in the groin while trying to defend herself.
Her actions, along with the quick response from the delivery driver, may have helped save her life.
Suspect Allegedly Planned Killing For Days
During questioning, Johnson allegedly admitted that he had been thinking about killing his wife for several days.
Police said the defendant claimed his business was facing serious financial problems. According to investigators, Johnson told officers he feared his wife would have to survive on reduced Social Security benefits if the business collapsed.
Authorities say Johnson believed he was protecting her from future hardship, though investigators still charged him with attempted murder.
Accused Held on $1 Million Bond
James Alan Johnson is currently being held in the Chisago County Jail on a $1 million bond.
As of now, the case has not yet appeared in Minnesota’s online court records system. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident.
Community Shocked By Violent Domestic Attack
The case has drawn attention across Minnesota because of the brutal nature of the assault and the unusual role played by the Amazon delivery driver.
Many people online have praised the driver for acting quickly and potentially saving the victim’s life during a terrifying situation.
The investigation is still ongoing, and more details may emerge as court proceedings continue.
