A California man has been arrested and charged with murder after police say he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend before fleeing across the border into Mexico. Authorities later captured him while he was allegedly trying to return to the United States.
California Woman Fatally Shot Outside Workplace
According to the Tustin Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting on May 14 in Tustin, California.
When police arrived, they found 42-year-old Sandra Fernandez suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 47-year-old Juan Marquez, Fernandez’s ex-boyfriend.
Police allege that Marquez waited near Fernandez’s workplace before carrying out the deadly shooting.
Suspect Allegedly Fled to Mexico After Shooting
Authorities said Marquez crossed the U.S.-Mexico border shortly after the shooting through the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
After identifying him as the suspect, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for murder.
Police confirmed that Marquez was arrested on May 16 while attempting to cross back into the United States through the border checkpoint.
He is currently being held without bail.
Victim Was a Mother of Three
Sandra Fernandez was a single mother raising three children between the ages of 5 and 21.
According to reports, she had recently started a new job before the tragic incident happened.
Fernandez reportedly worked for a nonprofit organisation called Families Together.
