A strange incident in New York has gone viral after a man who arrived to pick up his friend from jail ended up getting arrested himself. Authorities say the man was allegedly drunk when he came to collect his friend, who had already been arrested for drunk driving earlier the same day.
New York Man Arrested While Picking Up Friend From Jail
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Antone Gilonna was arrested on Saturday outside the Montgomery County Jail in Fultonville, New York.
Police said Gilonna had come to the jail to pick up his friend, who was being released after being arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated (DWI).
However, things quickly took an unexpected turn when deputies reportedly noticed signs that Gilonna himself appeared intoxicated.
Police Suspected Driver Was Drunk
Authorities said Gilonna first drove into a restricted area near the jail instead of using the public parking section. When deputies approached him, they reportedly suspected he was under the influence of alcohol.
Police then conducted a field sobriety test, which they claim confirmed their suspicions. Gilonna was immediately taken into custody.
Officials did not reveal his exact blood alcohol content (BAC), but he was charged with driving while intoxicated.
License Was Already Revoked
During the investigation, deputies also discovered that Gilonna’s driving licence had already been revoked.
According to police, his licence was suspended because of an earlier DWI-related conviction and refusal to take a chemical test in a previous case.
He now faces several charges, including:
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
- Driving with a BAC of 0.08% or higher
- Aggravated unlicensed operation
- Driving without a valid licence
Released After Processing
After being processed at the station, Gilonna was issued an appearance ticket and later released to a third party.
Authorities said he is expected to appear in Glen Town Court at a later date. However, officials have not publicly announced his court hearing schedule.
Incident Draws Attention Online
The unusual case has gained attention because of the irony surrounding the arrest. Social media users reacted strongly after learning that Gilonna allegedly drove to a jail to collect a friend arrested for drunk driving, only to face the same charges himself.
The case also serves as another reminder about the dangers and legal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol.
