A 40-year-old man tragically died after becoming trapped in an escalator at Davis Station in Massachusetts, in an incident captured on shocking CCTV footage.
Steven McClusky struggled as his coat became caught in the escalator machinery, ultimately leading to fatal injuries.
The Incident
The accident occurred in February when McClusky lost his balance while stepping off the escalator. His coat became trapped in the steps, tightening around his neck and restricting his airway.
CCTV footage shows more than a dozen commuters walking past him as he struggled, with one person pausing briefly before leaving the scene. McClusky collapsed moments later, pinned at the bottom of the escalator.
Emergency Response
It took over 20 minutes for an employee to arrive and stop the escalator. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and paramedics performed CPR. McClusky was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital but remained in a coma for 10 days before passing away on March 9.
Authorities described him as “unresponsive, bare-chested, and his clothing tightly lodged within the escalator steps.”
Family Reaction
In a tribute, McClusky’s father said, “He loved creating things and took satisfaction in seeing a job through from start to finish. Above all, he loved being father to his two sons, Shayne and Steven, who meant the world to him.”
His family has called for the MBTA to take accountability for the accident. His sister, Shannon Flaherty, said, “I don’t want them to say the MBTA did nothing wrong. I want them to acknowledge they failed him.”
Investigation
The MBTA described the incident as a “terrible accident” and urged the public to help others if they see someone in trouble. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding McClusky’s death.
