A tragic incident in Pennsylvania has left a 14-year-old girl dead after an accidental shooting, authorities say. A teen has been charged in connection with her death.

Upper Darby Police Department (UDPD) responded to a 911 call on May 14 about a person suffering from a gunshot wound at a residence on the 100 block of Springton Road. The victim was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive.

Teen Charged With Third-Degree Murder

After an extensive investigation, police charged a 14-year-old boy — identified by local outlets — as an adult with third-degree murder.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community and that they were working closely with the family.

What Happened

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt told 6 ABC that the incident occurred while a group of friends, including two boys and two girls, were hanging out at the home.

The group allegedly found a handgun in the victim’s bedroom, which belonged to her mother. While playing with it in an upstairs bedroom, the gun accidentally discharged, striking the victim in the head.

Bernhardt emphasized that the shooting was not related to violence or a dispute.

A witness told police she heard the boy reportedly say, “Oh, my God, I just killed her!” according to the criminal complaint.

Community Reaction

Neighbors called the shooting a “terrible tragedy.”

  • Sheryle Williams Barnes said, “It’s crazy. Never want that to happen to anyone.”
  • Aspara Agyeman added, “Any time a young person loses their life, it’s a sad occasion. Today was a sad day, not only for the family but for the community as a whole.”

Police Message on Gun Safety

Superintendent Bernhardt stressed the importance of securing firearms safely.

“There’s no redo when it comes to guns. Once a life is taken, it cannot be taken back,” he said.

“Kids need to realize guns are not toys. A bad decision, a careless moment has forever changed the lives of our victim’s family, those three other juveniles that were there, their families, and our entire community.”
