President Donald Trump shared photos Saturday showing progress on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which is undergoing renovations in anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary. The project is slated for completion before July Fourth, with Trump highlighting improvements in materials and surface quality.
Renovation Progress and Updates
The images posted by Trump on Truth Social displayed the pool basin with reflections of the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument at either end.
Trump described the upgrades, including sandblasting granite, resurfacing exterior stone, and enhancing walkways.
He also noted the use of a higher-quality sealer with increased reflectivity, claiming the renovation would improve both the pool’s appearance and longevity.
“Looking really good! Should be completed before the Fourth of July, our target date,” Trump wrote, emphasizing that the project is larger and more thorough than originally planned.
Concerns About Materials and Color
Critics have raised objections to the renovation, particularly the use of “industrial-grade” material in a color described as “American flag blue.” The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS), arguing that the new coloration fundamentally alters the visual and experiential character of the Reflecting Pool.
“The new coloration will cause the pool to resemble a large swimming pool rather than the reflective civic landscape it was designed to be,” the group wrote in a complaint obtained by Politico.
TCLF President and CEO Charles A. Birnbaum emphasized that the project should have been reviewed under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, given the pool’s listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Trump’s Defense of the Project
Trump defended the renovation, noting in a separate Truth Social post that the project uses “industrial strength materials” to ensure a longer life and superior finish.
He reiterated that the work is ahead of schedule and framed the effort as a cost-effective improvement compared to previous administrations.
“Also went to a higher quality sealer with more reflectivity. Check it out before the Opening — It’s a very exciting project!” Trump wrote, emphasizing both the aesthetic and functional upgrades.
Interior Department Response
Reports from The New York Times suggested potential issues with the partially refinished surface, including bubbles, small holes, and color inconsistencies. Documents cited in the article indicated that as of Sunday, only 35% of the surface had been fully coated and some joints remained unaddressed.
An Interior Department spokesperson, Katie Martin, clarified that sections of the basin are in various stages of repair and reassured that the final product will be uniform. “As with any project, there will be revisions to the process to ensure the most efficient tools are used to get to the end goal,” Martin said.
White House Statement
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers praised the renovation, asserting that the project will be completed in time for America’s 250th celebrations and at a lower cost compared with previous administrations. She credited Trump for restoring the Reflecting Pool “to all its glory,” positioning the project as a key component of the upcoming Independence Day festivities.
